How Does IPTV Work? A Plain-English Technical Breakdown

"IPTV runs over the internet" is true but doesn't explain much on its own. This is what happens between a channel being broadcast and it showing up on your screen.

The server side: encoding a live signal

A live channel's broadcast feed gets captured and compressed (encoded) into a digital video stream. That encoding step is what makes it small enough to send over the internet instead of requiring a dedicated broadcast frequency. The provider's servers keep multiple channels encoded and ready to stream simultaneously.

The delivery: packets, not files

Unlike downloading a video file, IPTV streams the video as a continuous sequence of small data packets sent in real time. Your player app receives these packets, buffers a small amount ahead (usually a few seconds), and decodes them into the picture and sound you see while the next packets are still arriving.

Since every frame of video is arriving live over your connection, any interruption in that flow shows up immediately as buffering or a frozen frame.
