What Is the Xtream Codes API and How Does It Work?

Xtream Codes is the most widely used backend system in IPTV. Knowing what it does explains things that might otherwise seem odd, like your channel list updating without you doing anything.

An API, not a file

An M3U playlist is a static text file listing stream URLs. Xtream Codes is a live API: your player app sends your username and password to the server, and the server replies in real time with your current channel list, EPG data and account status.

What the live connection allows

• Your provider can add, remove or update channels without you needing a new playlist file.
• EPG data updates automatically without a separate download step.
• Your account status (active, expired, device limit) is checked on every login, not just once.
• VOD libraries (movies and series) can be browsed dynamically rather than being a fixed list.
