A VPN isn't required. It can add privacy from your internet provider, and it can help if your ISP slows down streaming traffic. But it adds an extra stop for your data, so on most connections it makes streaming slightly slower rather than faster. What a VPN does

A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic and sends it through a server run by the VPN company before it reaches the internet. Two things change as a result:

• Your ISP can see that you're using a VPN, but not which services you connect to through it.
• The services you connect to see the VPN server's address instead of your home address.

What a VPN doesn't change is the stream itself. It doesn't add channels, improve picture quality or make a slow connection faster.

Reasons some people use one

• Privacy from the ISP. Some people prefer that their provider can't see which services they use. That applies to all their browsing as well as IPTV.
• ISP throttling. Some ISPs slow down traffic they identify as video streaming, especially at busy times. Because a VPN hides what the traffic is, it can sometimes stop that slowdown.

Does a VPN make IPTV work better? Test it

2. Watch a busy channel for 15-20 minutes and note any buffering.
3. Turn the VPN on (a server near you), and repeat both steps at a similar time of day.

• Choose a nearby server. The closer the VPN server, the smaller the speed and delay penalty.
• Use WireGuard if it's offered. Most major VPNs support the WireGuard protocol, which is generally faster and lighter on devices than older protocols.
• Use split tunnelling where available. This lets you choose which apps go through the VPN, so you can include or exclude the IPTV player without affecting other apps.
• Consider a router-level VPN for devices that can't run a VPN app, such as some Smart TVs. This needs a router that supports it.

What a VPN doesn't do
